London Bridge Rotary Club helps families in need at Christmas.

For over 20 years, the London Bridge Rotary Club, has been fortunate enough to help Havasu’s local needy families during the holidays, with their Adopt-A-Family Christmas program.  The Rotary Club raised $12,000 at the club’s Harley Raffle Event this year, which will fund the 2016 program. A special “Thank You” to all who participated in the Harley Raffle.

The Salvation Army recently provided the club with the names of 19 families and 50 children for Adapt-A-Family. Rotary Club members manage the whole process from start to delivery. Members raise the funds. They shop at Walmart and JC Penney for toys and clothing for all the children. They wrap the presents and deliver them to each family along with gift certificates to Walmart and Safeway, in addition to the Christmas Dinner supplied by the Salvation Army. Pictured here is the beginning of this years’ shopping spree. (12.6.16 @ Walmart)

How We Fly Satelites

Fred Barber presented a fascinating program at our September 10 meeting describing some technical and logistical challenges in getting to where we are today in the multi-pupose use of satelites.

The space industry has made an amazing difference during our lifetimes in how we gain and share knowledge and communicate across the globe.  There were many obstacles to overcome to get to the place where we are today.  Hearing about the evolution from someone who was intimately involved was fascinating.

July 27 Program Highlights

Our club learned about the variety of rescue operations required in Mohave County, and the diverse terrain served in the 6th largest county in the US (excluding Alaska).  Logistics for the team are further challenged by the physical barrier dividing the county since the northern area is on the opposite side of the Grand Canyon.  Important information for those who enjoy four-wheeling in the dessert:

1.  Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.
2.  Take your cell phone with you, but realize you may not have service in remote areas.
4.  Take lots of sunscreen, water and extra non-perishable food.
3.  If you have an accident or run out of fuel, stay with your vehicle.

If the team has to send air surveillance to look for you, it will be much easier to spot your vehicle than it will be to spot an individual.

Collaboration is the key to success of many of our Rotary service activities.  Working with the Havasu Community Health Foundation, Mohave County Health Department, Havasu Regional Medical Center, school nurses, and many others, families in our community have been able get required immunizations for their children, sports physicals, various screenings, and a wealth of information at this annual event which started with the partnership of Rotary and Kiwanis more than a decade ago.

Please share the information with families you know.

Walt Lietz - Service Above Self

Remembering 9/11 and the World Trade Center is unique for each of us as we recall exactly where we were and have unforgettable images that pass through our minds as we recall that dark day and the days, weeks, and months that followed.

Some of those memories involve the horrors of the impact of deliberate, hate-filled action, yet other memories are of the many who stepped up to fill the many needs that arose from that horrific day.

Our own Walt Lietz was one of those special citizens whose skills were needed.  He worked for months to help identify remains of over 1800 of the 3000 who lost their lives that horrible morning.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Attendance exceeded expectations at the first local observance of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day which held in the Lake Havasu City Aquatic/Convention Center.  Several London Bridge Rotarians took advantage of the opportunity to attend the very informative event as our club's "5th Wednesday" activity for June.

Elder abuse can have many different aspects:  neglect, abandonment, physical, emotional, and financial exploitation.  Far too often, the abuse is never reported.  Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a community with heightened awareness to protect our elders and other vulnerable adults.

Ms. Havasu Senior 2015 Visits Club

Entertainment was provided by the 2015 Ms. Havasu Senior, Pinky Mills, when she attended our June 1 meeting as a guest of Jeanie Morgan.  President Gary had her present the joke of the day.

During announcements, Jeanie was allowed to introduce Christine Simmons, who is a Ms. Havasu Senior Pageant Co-Chair this year.  A contestant in the 2015 pageant, Christine enjoyed participating in the event so much that she is visiting clubs and organizations with Pinky to encourage women over the age of 65 to apply to be contestants in the 2016 pageant which will be held September 11.  She encouraged business owners and managers present to be pageant sponsors.  The pageant is a major fundraiser for Havasu Community Health Foundation.  She also encouraged all to attend and enjoy being delightfully entertained by some of Lake Havasu's very special seniors.

Pinky shared some highlights of her experience in 2015 and also encouraged the club members to help solicit contestants for this year's pageant.  The winning contestant will get to name a local charity to receive $1,000 from the pageant proceeds.

She told some anecdotal stories of the difference that is made in the lives of the students who have benefited with toiletries, sweatshirts, shoes, etc.  The project enables the students to be successful even though experiencing very difficult personal situations.

She was surprised and delighted when President, Gary, presented a $10,000 check to her.  She had feared that the amount would be reduced and that she would have to figure out other resources to serve students in the 2016-17 academic year.

Recovering Politician's Views on the Coming Elections

Sergeant at Arms, Mitch Emerson looked a little concerned, since we are not supposed to allow political bias from our podium, when visiting Rotarian Gordon Grote stated he was a recovering politician and went on to explain that over the coming months we would be bombarded with sound bites about all the things that are wrong with our nation and how the person speaking is the only only capable of fixing those problems.  In more words, Gordon reminded us that we are still the greatest nation on the planet and don't have nearly as much to worry about as those running for office will try to tell us.

PDG Craig Wilson Invites YOU to RLI at PETS

Fellow Rotarian,

I want to encourage you to take an opportunity that was not available to me when I joined Rotary. On March 5, during the annual President Elect Training Session (PETS), you will have the chance to attend 1 of 3 Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) sessions that are offered starting at 0900. I will help facilitate Session 2, so it would be good to see you in the classroom if you have completed Session 1. The RLI experience will help round out just what Rotary is all about; why we have clubs (34,000) in more than 220 countries and focus on doing good in our world with 1.2 million members willing to share their time, talent and money with those less fortunate both here and throughout the world. It is worth your time - you will not regret the time spent.

Vision 20/20 Shared at February 10 Meeting

Partnership for Economic Development CEO, James Gray, shared highlights from the Vision 20/20 Plan.  Development of the plan has been a collaborative effort involving a representative cross-section of individuals from the Lake Havasu community.  Whether or not the Lake Havasu Plan wins the next two levels of competition resulting in some dollars coming to support the plan, the community will win as those committed to the plans implementation continue to work together and move forward.

The Rotary Foundation - Highlighted February 3 Meeting

Cindy Dione shared highlights from her weekend at RYLA in January.  Following her enthusiastic presentation, the club was treated to hearing from two of our club's RYLA delegates.  All felt the weekend was life-changing.  A key observation was that the delegates learned to be more accepting and less judgmental, learned to overcome their fears and understand they have the power to make a difference.

John Parrott reflected on his second term as President of our club. The Rotary Foundation Update - Bring a Guest to Today's Meeting!

David Simmer Will be coming to our meeting today to update our club on the Rotary Foundation, he will be speaking of all the good that comes from the foundation as well as a question-and-answer period afterwards. He will be traveling from Phoenix to address our club and I'm urging everybody if it all possible to please attend this very important meeting! It is very disappointing and looks bad for the club when we have speakers travel from such a distance, to give a report on something as important as the foundation and only 20 or so people are in attendance! January 20 Meeting Highlights

Roger Johnson shared memories of the year he led our club as President.  He also shared some highlights from the balloon festival balloon ride activities.  He looked a little surprised and dismayed when he was told he would be the chair of the balloonfest in 2017.   Is it the truth?

Steve Hamilton stumped most of the tables with some unusual and amusing trivia during the Sgt at Arms program.

Jerry Ernst introduced his son, Jason Ernst who intrigued club members with stories of his world travels.  Ann and Jerry listed as proud parents while Jason described his first trip abroad, which was a short exchange to Germany while in high school.  Later, he traveled to London as a recipient of one of our club's COLLBREF scholarships.  A world map showing the countries he has visited vs. the ones he has not visually illustrated the extent of his travels.

Jason's fascination with being immersed in and learning about other cultures has never stopped.  He was able to figure out how to earn enough to fund his travels and provide a living utilizing internet access and his language and writing skills.

TRVFA Grants Local Scholarships

The Rotary Vocational Fund of Arizona grants scholarships for vocational training programs that are not part of a traditional four-year degree program.  Over our holiday break, I had the privilege of interviewing three applicants who applied for grants to attend a caregiver training course offered by a local program offered by Jennifer Newmann through her All About Care Academy.  While this career path may be very rewarding work for those with a heart for service, it is not rewarding financially.  It would be very difficult for anyone following this path to afford the state-mandated certification training without this scholarship opportunity.

Pictorial Review of 2015 Rotary Memories

London Bridge Rotary Club may be smaller than it used to be, but our members have every reason to take pride in our accomplishments for 2015.  These photos highlight some of the fundraising, fun and fellowship as well as some of our more significant service projects in 2015.

We are lucky to have the photos Gary Meyers takes and shares on Facebook to document our many activities.

When each of us commit to supporting multiple activities and projects, we seem to be unstoppable.  Just think what we could do in 2016 if each of us would commit to recruiting one or more new members who would enjoy sharing the service above self commitment that is what makes it possible to have a club as wonderful as ours!

The shoppers had taken time to meet the parents and children so that toys that were wanted were purchased as well as needed clothing.  The families were screened by Salvation Army where  food baskets will be available for pickup when it is time to deliver the gifts over the next few days.

Rotary Club of Tucson President, Phil Gutt, on Charitable Reserves

Gordon Bartlett recently sent an article he thought our club members might find interesting.  The article was written written by Rotary Club of Tucson President, Phil Gutt, to share from his old club's Newsletter, The Tuscotarian:

There exists a fundamental difference pertaining to organizations that give away money. At one extreme is the practice of disbursing all money collected during a period before (or as) the period ends. Quite different is the system of retaining some funds for use in future periods. There are justifications, and strong advocates, for each method.

What are reasons to carry a balance into next year, or, more decisively, to endow funds so that the principal can never be spent? It is the uncertainty of maintaining donation levels that is most-often cited. Endowments and reserves enable charitable organizations to weather swings in income from year to year. Many groups survived the 2008 recession only by virtue of having held reserves.

Gordon Bartlett introduced a new twist to the Rotary Moment during the Gray era.

Past Club Presidents will occasionally be asked to share highlights of their year.  Gary Kellogg was the first - since his term as our 15th President in 1984-85 is the first term of any Past President who is still a member of our club.  If you are not familiar with the significance of his pink shirt, take time to ask him why that is an icon for his year of service.

Independence Day

You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness.  You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.  ~Erma Bombeck

Dues Increase Starts July 1

Dues will go up $10 per quarter as a result of the club's acceptance of the proposed 2015-16 operating budget at our most recent business meeting.  Invoices will soon go out via e-mail.  If you do not receive a dues billing, contact our Treasurer, Brian Castle.

Timely payment of dues is not only the right thing to do, but it is a condition of membership according to our club's operating documents.  This is one of many subjects covered in our Club Constitution.  As member clubs of Rotary International, clubs throughout the world have uniform club constitutions.  Follow the link to see what is said in our constitution about this subject.

What will 2015-16 bring? It's a Gray area!

Each of our club presidents has left their own unique mark on our history.  It is yet to be seen what a year under the leadership of Gary Gray will bring.  It’s a Gray area.

The top 10 things we know about our 2015-16 Club President.
10.          Money makes him smile.
9.            He has a lot of blue shirts.
8.            When not wearing a blue shirt, he is likely to be wearing white with blue trim.

Installation Banquet Highlights

Assistant Governor Doug Browning was the featured speaker at the J une 20 installation banquet in the Bridgeview Room at Shugrue's.  He encouraged club members to go into the big tent of Rotary instead of just enjoying the side shows enjoyed by Rotarians in their local club activities.  As exciting as the side shows are, you haven't really enjoyed the circus until you experience the excitement of all the actiivities in the big tent!  Investing your time, talent and heart in International and District projects is where we learn what it is to go from being a club member to knowing what it is to be a committed Rotarian - wanting to make a difference in the world.

Lisa VanElla's Last Meeting as President

Because of a business meeting conflict, Lisa conducted her last meeting as Club President on Wednesday, June 10.  Her son,

Wyatt, who has been active in Interact was her happy guest.  He was all smiles because of his soon-to-be celebrated 16th birthday and the new level of freedom he will enjoy as one of Lake Havasu's newest drivers.
Lisa was smiling because of the freedom she will soon enjoy as Gary Gray takes the gavel and becomes the presiding leader of our club for the coming year Saturday night.

Weekly Coin Sales Report

Shown in the photo is Tom Kirchner selling Rotary Coins at Winterfest this past weekend.  The total sales have not yet reached the Gab Editor, but Nick Wolfe and Don Klostermeier sold $870.00 during their shift Saturday morning.

There was only one envelope left from coin sales at the bridge when Nick went to pick up and process the coin sales proceeds.  Jerry Ernst and Lois Heath sold $172.00.  It seems doubtful that there were six "no-shows," but it is possible Rotarians showed up to sell, but were locked out of the coin shack.  If this should happen to you, the Visitor Center has a key which can be used to enter the shack, but the key MUST BE RETURNED immediately to the visitor center so it will be available the next time it is needed.

Tribute to one of The Greatest Generation

Mel Deluca was an icon in the London Bridge Rotary Club.  He faithfully managed the club's weekly raffle for more years than most members can remember, with over 30 years of perfect attendance.  His memorial service will be held at 3:30 PM Thursday, January 8 at Lietz-Fraze Funeral Home in Lake Havasu.

December 17 Christmas Auction

On December 17, a new tradition was started with the club's first Christmas Auction.  Tania Sobchuk and Brian Castle did an outstanding job motivating the gathering of items to be auctioned and came to the meeting ready to have fun!  Auctioneer, Gary Kellogg did a great job of boosting the size of the winning bids as he encouraged competition between members and guests as they bid on the gifts.

Help Needed for Interact Trip to Mexico

Dan Mathews has requested help from local Rotarians.  23 Interact students are going to Mexico this weekend and they only have one passenger van with 14 seats.  Anyone with resources for a van should contact Dan at Mohave State Bank.  He is also collecting blankets to deliver to the needy in the community they will be visiting in Mexico.  Old suitcases to carry the blankets in would also be helpful.  Those items can be dropped at Mohave State bank.  Theresa Crowell, has let us know KMart has blankets on sale for $2.99.

Members of the London Bridge and Lake Havasu Sunrise Rotary Clubs and their guests who attended the joint Christmas Party Saturday, December 6, at the home of Rotarian, Dean Barlow, were treated to a very enjoyable evening.  The food, catered by Barley Brothers was outstanding.  The atmosphere, in a home designed for entertaining, was most enjoyable.   Everyone seemed to enjoy the opportunity to have time to relax and enjoy being together.  The white elephant gift raffle created an entertaining activity that involved everyone.  Thank you, LBR Social Chairperson and Greeter Extraordinaire, Cindy Dione!

London Bridge Rotary Club members had a "brown bag" lunch at the Romer Beverage Distribution Facility near the airport.

Our club has a brown bag lunch to tour local business facilities occasionally.  The tradition serves two purposes:

  1. The funds saved from having lunch at our regular meeting place are used to fund designated programs, such as Gift of Life, Arizona.
  2. Rotarians have the opportunity to see the inner workings of a business in our area that is a strong contributor to our economy

The third purpose is to make sure we are serious about having fun as Rotarians!

Family of Rotary

Posted by Helen Morgan on Mar 25, 2014

Significant life events touch all of us, and I want to thank Lisa Fuhrman for doing a great job of keeping us abreast of things that are happening in the lives of our fellow Rotarians this year.

Our club recently lost a fellow-Rotarian, Dave Vedder.  Dave joined our club in 1991.  He quietly served our club. He and his family have generously allowed our club to warehouse our coin inventory in their business location.

The saddest thing to me as I listened to his friends and family talk about their special memories at his memorial service was that I had not taken the time to get to really get to know Dave on a personal level during this lifetime.  I missed the opportunity to know about the things that gave him joy, caused some laughable frustration, and see what an inspiration he was to those closest to him.

Lisa can keep us informed, but the lesson I have learned is that if I am to be the kind of Rotary friend I want to be, it is up to me to reach out and really get to know my fellow-Rotarians and truly show I care while I still have the opportunity.

Jeanie

Open World Delegation from Russia visits Lake Havasu

Posted by Jeanie Morgan on Mar 11, 2014

Image

Gary and Dr. Pam Meyers and Jeanie Morgan, met with the Open World delegation from Russia  at The Refuge Monday afternoon.  The delegation is being hosted by the Kingman Route 66 Rotary Club.  Gary’s impression:

First, it was refreshing to hear that some of the personal economic and social challenges that the Russians experience are so very similar to our own.

Second, it appears that they share the same concerns and difficulties of young people in the work force.  Rapidly changing economic times makes it difficult finding long term gainful employment in each of our nations.  Questions of how to efficiently match up career education with potential employers is a perennial problem.

Third, it was interesting to hear that they have few, if any, qualms about trying to be “politically correct” in the equal treatment of the sexes.  Boys are encouraged to do “manly things” such as learning the military ways of the traditional “Cossacks”, and the young women are happy to be excluded from these youth training camps!

Fourth, the journalist seemed quite adamant about explaining Russia’s new efforts to allow all journalists and reporters far more freedom to report whatever they believe is worth reporting.  The “old days” of state controlled media are fading fast… at least that was her opinion.

Finally, if Russia wanted to impress Americans with a very professional and attractive group of female representatives, they were successful.

Adopt-A-Family Program is Celebrated at February 26 Meeting

Posted by Jeanie Morgan on Mar 03, 2014

At the February 26 club meeting, Adopt-A-Family Chairperson, Lisa Fuhrman, showcased the club's adopt-a-family program.

She described the screening process, which has been coordinated by Julie Feist of the Salvation Army for the past few years.  The process allows our shoppers to get to know the families they will be shopping for, which allows a much greater and more sensitive approach to filling the needs of each individual in each family.

Managers of JCPenney and WalMart were recognized for making the shopping process as efficient as possible, and for discounting the merchandise purchased maximizing the help each family was provided.  Lisa also explained that each family is given gift cards for grocery shores and KMart or WalMart so the family can purchase necessities that may not be in their budget.

President, Jerry Ernst, Doreen Bloomer, and Thom Felke each shared their memories of their experiences.  A common theme was the heartfelt appreciation shown.

Larry Feist presented a plaque from Salvation Army to celebrate the success of the program.

London Bridge Rotary Poster Celebrating 100 Years of Rotary in Arizona

Posted by Jeanie Morgan on Mar 03, 2014

On March 1, 2014, Arizona’s oldest clubs and all three Arizona districts celebrated 100 years of Rotary in our state.

The history of Phoenix Rotary 100 is, in many ways, the history of Phoenix. Members have included mayors and governors, senators and members of Congress, state legislators, judges and community leaders of all types, a veritable Who's Who for Arizona and Phoenix. Phoenix Rotary 100 has been an instrumental leader and partner in dozens of major community projects over its first 100 years. As Phoenix and Arizona have grown, so has Rotary in Arizona. From that initial Club 100 and its 32 members, today, Rotary in the Grand Canyon State boasts over 120 clubs and more than 3,000 members.

There is much to be proud of as Phoenix Rotary 100 celebrates its 100th year, starting a long commitment to Service Above Self.
