Havasu Stick'em - Saturday, August 6
Collaboration is the key to success of many of our Rotary service activities.  Working with the Havasu Community Health Foundation, Mohave County Health Department, Havasu Regional Medical Center, school nurses, and many others, families in our community have been able get required immunizations for their children, sports physicals, various screenings, and a wealth of information at this annual event which started with the partnership of Rotary and Kiwanis more than a decade ago.

Please share the information with families you know.
Following the Stick'em event, Havasu Health Walk Challenge, a partner under the HCHF umbrella, will host a family swim day in the Aquatic Center.  The local Elks lodge will be providing hot dogs for those participating in the swim day.

Tri-Club 5th Wednesday Happy Hour - August 31
Past President, and Assistant DG, Gary Gray, asks that you mark your calendar and plan to attend the tri-club happy hour planned for the 5th Wednesday, August 31, 2016 from 5 to 7 PM in the Bridgeview Room at Shugrue's.  There will be an appetizer buffet for all to enjoy.

A 50/50 drawing will benefit the Norona Effect.  Our District Governor, Dan Messersmith, plans to attend.  This will be a great venue to get acquainted with our DG and enjoy the fellowship of Rotarians from all three local clubs in a nice, relaxed atmosphere.
Gary Meyers - August 2 Rotary Makeup
Documenting his August 2 attendance at the Summit County Colorado Rotary Club, Gary Meyers begins his 26th year as a Rotarian with perfect attendance.

Visiting other clubs has enabled him to keep his perfect attendance record while away from home and enriched his knowledge of the many ways Rotarians serve their communities and the world!  Congratulate Gary by visiting our facebook page and commenting on his post.

July 27 Program Highlights
Our club learned about the variety of rescue operations required in Mohave County, and the diverse terrain served in the 6th largest county in the US (excluding Alaska).  Logistics for the team are further challenged by the physical barrier dividing the county since the northern area is on the opposite side of the Grand Canyon.  Important information for those who enjoy four-wheeling in the dessert:

1.  Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.
2.  Take your cell phone with you, but realize you may not have service in remote areas.
4.  Take lots of sunscreen, water and extra non-perishable food.
3.  If you have an accident or run out of fuel, stay with your vehicle.

If the team has to send air surveillance to look for you, it will be much easier to spot your vehicle than it will be to spot an individual.
Looking at the bottom image, their body language makes it difficult to imagine that these members were waiting in line to pay "happy bucks!"

From the August 2016 issue of The Rotarian Quilts may be utilitarian objects, but Rod Buffington’s “quilt paintings” – watercolors on paper that are then covered with small bits of fabric – are geometrics where mathematics and whimsy intersect. Buffington, a member of the Rotary Club of Springfield, Ill., didn’t come up with this unusual method overnight. His voilà moment came as he beheld the mesmerizing quilts made by his grandmother, who lived to 104 and continued her craft until she was 98. To create his works, Buffington lays cotton fabric over paintings he has created, then hand-...

From the August 2016 issue of The Rotarian Steven Goldsmith is a mediation and training leader with Mediators Beyond Borders International, an organization that develops local skills for peace building and conflict resolution around the world. Goldsmith was among 150 experts and leaders who gathered at a Rotary presidential conference in Ontario, Calif., to discuss issues related to resolving conflicts and reducing violence. More than 1,500 people attended the conference, the first of five hosted this year by 2015-16 Rotary President K.R. Ravindran and Foundation Trustee Chair Ray...

From the August 2016 issue of The Rotarian It’s 3 a.m. on a Sunday, and Katheryne Rosa Barazorda Cuellar is up, preparing to work in her mother’s soup stall in the small Peruvian town of Anta, near the Inca capital of Cusco. Smart and seemingly indefatigable, she has a quick smile and infectious laugh. Rosa is studying to be a chemical engineer, and she has unmistakable talent and drive. She needs them. Poverty, gender bias, and violence darken the lives of many young Peruvian women, including her. Rosa is lucky, though. Her family supports her. And for the past four years,  so has Visionaria...

More than 6,000 Rotary members in 154 countries reported on their experiences with the new grant model as part of an evaluation during the 2015-16 Rotary year. The results will help us improve the grant process and learn what impact the Foundation's global grants have on our areas of focus. Among the key findings: 90 percent of respondents support the grant model; 86 percent see it as an improvement over the former model. Grant activity and the average grant award continue to increase each year. Rotary members want more resources to help them apply for grants and design sustainable projects...
