River Scene Magazine covered activities at Havasu Stick'em on Saturday, August 6. This was the 10th year for local Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs to partner to make this immunization day happen for youngsters in the Lake Havasu community.
Havasu Community Health Foundation has been the central organizing body for the past few years, and have included Mohave County Health Department, school nurses, and other interested volunteers in the planning committee in addition to representatives from each of the participating clubs.
It is estimated that 75+ youngsters received immunizations, 59 sports physical vouchers were given out, and well over 100 safety helmets were given out. In addition, oral health and vision screenings were available. There were a number of vendor tables with activities for the youth who attended, and information for their parents about available resources in our area.
There were several on-stage demonstrations of activities available for local youth. There were lots of smiling faces and not too many tears.
Past President, and Assistant DG, Gary Gray, asks that you mark your calendar and plan to attend the tri-club happy hour planned for the 5th Wednesday, August 31, 2016 from 5 to 7 PM in the Bridgeview Room at Shugrue's. There will be an appetizer buffet for all to enjoy.
A 50/50 drawing will benefit the Norona Effect. Our District Governor, Dan Messersmith, plans to attend. This will be a great venue to get acquainted with our DG and enjoy the fellowship of Rotarians from all three local clubs in a nice, relaxed atmosphere.
Suzanne Ballard was the acting Sgt at Arms at the August 3 meeting. She failed to stump many of the tables with her Arizona trivia questions, but did make some money for the club through the payment of happy bucks which followed.
County Supervisor, Steve Moss, gave a "state of the county" presentation and fielded questions from the members and guests present.
The World Health Organization has confirmed two cases of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) in Nigeria, the first cases in the country since July 2014. After passing a year without a case of the wild poliovirus, Nigeria was removed from the list of polio-endemic countries in September 2015. These cases – from two local government areas of Borno state – occurred in July 2016.
The Government of Nigeria – in partnership with the Global Polio Eradication Initiative – will take immediate steps to respond quickly to the outbreak to prevent further spread of the disease. This response will include...

Four hundred years ago, the invention of the microscope gave us a glimpse into an aspect of the world too tiny to be seen by the human eye. The microscope works by capturing light shone on or through an object observed through lenses, which magnify the resulting image so we can see it. But a microscope has its limits. In 1873, German physicist Ernst Abbe discovered that the ability of a microscope to see past a certain size was limited not by the quality of its lens, but by the wavelength of light shining into it. And since the wavelength of visible...

Quilts may be utilitarian objects, but Rod Buffington’s “quilt paintings” – watercolors on paper that are then covered with small bits of fabric – are geometrics where mathematics and whimsy intersect. Buffington, a member of the Rotary Club of Springfield, Ill., didn’t come up with this unusual method overnight. His voilà moment came as he beheld the mesmerizing quilts made by his grandmother, who lived to 104 and continued her craft until she was 98. To create his works, Buffington lays cotton fabric over paintings he has created, then hand-...
